The Kagiso Magistrates’ Court found Tebogo Sepele guilty of common robbery and possession of stolen property, and sentenced him to two years direct imprisonment for each offence.
Sepele was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The court found that, “The accused is a danger to society and needs to be seriously rehabilitated”.
Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya explained that at about 23:00 on June 1, the victim was driving on Impala Road when he noticed the accused and his accomplice hitchhiking to Tshepisong.
He picked them up and while driving, one of them sprayed pepper spray towards the victim’s eyes. As the victim stopped the vehicle, the accused and his accomplice took his cellphone and jumped out of the vehicle.
In another incident in Tshepisong, the same accused attacked and robbed his victim of his cellphone at knife point. Kagiso Police received a complaint of common robbery at about 08:50 on June 23.”
Captain Sibiya further explained that police followed up on the report and went to Sepele’s residence where they found him asleep.
“The victim pointed out the accused to the police as the attacker. Police reportedly conducted a body search on Sepele and found the victim’s cellphone in his possession. He was arrested and tried on both cases.”
Brigadir Themba Maduna applauded his detectives for a good investigation and commitment in the execution of their duties, adding, “The Kagiso policing precinct has become one of the highest contributing areas to violent crimes. Victims of such heinous crimes lose their belongings at gunpoint through severe aggressive and inhuman behaviour by uncompromising and a self-centred perpetrator.”
