Police were tipped off about someone who was assembling phendukas to supply illegal miners. They use the chimney-shaped heavy steel pots in the cleansing and purifying processes.

“When they arrived at the suspect’s residence, he had disappeared but some of his equipment was found behind the house as well as inside his room.”

More than four phendukas, five motors, electrical cords and an assortment of equipment were confiscated during the sting operation.

Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna said most of the recent arrests were as a result of information received from law-abiding and concerned residents from different sectors in their area.
