Police warn of increased hijackings on N14, R28, R563 and R24

Police issue warning as more and more victims are being hijacked at stop signs at night, in their driveways while opening or closing their gate and leaving the engine running.

Krugersdorp Police are concerned about motor vehicle hijackings the past few weeks especially on the N14, R28, R563 and R24.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane said in some cases the victims were hijacked when they stopped at stop signs at night, or in their driveways while opening or closing their gate, and even while just quickly running into the house to fetch something and leaving their car engine running.

“We appeal to the community to be extra careful even during level 3 lockdown. There is no slowing down for the police. We still have to ensure that those who want to enrich themselves by harming and stealing from others are prevented from doing so.”

The Krugersdorp Police also shared some tips to help keep residents safe:
• Do not leave your vehicle engine running when get out.
• Avoid isolated areas at all times.
• Limit your night trips or at least take someone along with you.
• If strangers are loitering near or at your driveway, rather drive past first.
• If something seems suspicious, do not talk to strangers; rather be rude and drive away.
• Vary the route you travel to and from work if possible.
• Consider using a lift club instead of travelling alone.
• If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off immediately if possible, or sound the hooter to draw attention.
• Do not give hitchhikers a lift.
• Consider installing an electric gate.
• Do not stop if someone shows you have a flat tyre or there is something wrong on your vehicle. Rather drive to a safe place like a filling station or to the nearest police station.

Acting Krugersdorp Police station commander, Colonel Christelle Booysen further encouraged the community to work with the police and become part of their local Community Policing Forum or neighbourhood watch.
