Police warn about adhering to lockdown regulations after attack on man

The police urge residents to adhere to the Disaster Management Act lockdown regulations. This comes after a man walking home from a night vigil was attacked.

The Kagiso Police wish to stress the importance of adhering to the curfew. This comes after a man was attacked on his way home from a night vigil after curfew has started.

Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, said in a statement that a man from Chief Mogale had laid a complaint at the Kagiso Police on Monday, August 9.

The victim allegedly was robbed at about 03:15.

Kagiso Police wish to state that as much as it is the victim’s basic right to report the crime, he should have complied with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2020 regulations pertaining to the curfew.”

These regulations prohibit night vigils, after-tears and social gatherings of any kind until further notice.

“Further than that, the curfew is from 21:00 to 04:00,” he said, adding that the Kagiso Police are very concerned about people defying the lockdown regulations that are there to protect their well-being.

More and more people are arrested and charged with defying an order to be at their residential places after 21:00.”

Kagiso Police station commander, brigadier Themba Maduna said, “Police are disappointed and equally concerned that some are likely to lose their jobs as they are caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Apart from that, even more arrests for defiance of curfew can cause some damage to your reputation, making it difficult to secure employment.”

The Kagiso Police urge residents, especially the youth, to refrain from engaging in lawlessness.

Police have an obligation to investigate, arrest and charge, but we urge our public to act responsibly so that we can fight crime together.”
