Krugersdorp High School (KHS) has a lengthy history of pride and strong traditions.
Student representatives are appointed to help ensure that everything is smooth sailing for the school and its many learners. To ensure that this tradition continues, KHS recently announced their 2022 representative council of learners (RCL) team on whom the responsibility will fall to build up learner morale after the effects of Covid-19 and lockdown over almost two years.
New head girl Mahlatse Mahlake said, “When I was in Grade 8 and saw the RCLs. They were very inspiring and they all brought different things to the table. I also want to be that for someone younger who comes to the school. I also want to be someone who inspires the new kids. I’d like to bring back the spirit and tradition in the school. I feel the pandemic has taken away from that, because we’re all just so stressed. It’s not as fun as it used to be. I’d like to really make sure that we’re all enjoying school and bring back the sport and the spirit that the school used to have. I’m most looking forward to working with my team next year.”

Head Boy Galaletsang Rathebe added, “I believe as a Christian it’s all about serving. I came to school and found that leadership is the way to serve. My goals for next year are aligned with Mahlatse’s, to bring back the spirit of the school to how it was in Grade 8. Of course, it’s gone down because of Covid-19, but my goal for us is to bring it back. What I’m looking forward to the most is creating better relationships within the RCL.”

Deputy Head Girl Danii Choudree said, “I’ve always felt that so many people have so many different ideas and sometimes they don’t get a chance to share that because there’s no one representing them to the authority in the school. It’s nice to be that bridge for other people. I want to make sure that everyone feels heard and understood, and feel that they are making a difference in the school.”

Deputy Head Girl Avuyile Bekwa noted that, “I wanted to become a leader so I can spread positive energy in the school because as learners we’re all going through something. I just want to have a voice and use my position to make this a better place. My goal is to uplift everyone, whether you’re interested in sports, academics or culture. Especially for the ones who are interested in culture, I want to make sure that you know that loving culture is okay and you can get far doing it. I’m looking forward to working with my team, and I’ve already learned a lot over the past three days, and looking forward to learning more.”

Deputy Head Boy Ofentse Diale concluded that, “I don’t necessarily believe I’m as smart or talented as everyone else, but I think hard work beats talent in some cases; just show people that you don’t have to be the best at something to be able to do it. I just want to make the school a place people can enjoy coming to and bring positivity back into the school. I just want to learn and grow with the team.”

The group are already talking about organising events, hosting fun days and running the Grade 8 orientation programme.
