A GBV victim? There is 24-hour help now in Rietvallei

The Green Door project was recently launched in two of the most affected areas of Kagiso. This project will lend 24-hour support to victims of gender-based violence.

In an effort to support victims of gender-based violence (GBV), the Green Door project was recently launched in two of the most affected areas in Kagiso, namely the Soul City informal settlement and Swaneville.

Members of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Kagiso Police, Department of Social Development, local Community Policing Forum (CPF), Community Safety patrollers and gender-based violence brigades were all part of the launch.

Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said these two areas were among the biggest contributors of contact crimes, especially crimes that are directed at vulnerable groups like women and children.

The project will be run 24 hours a day and ensure that GBV victims receive the support and attention they need, when they need it.

“This structure must serve its purpose and not become a white elephant or a place where victims’ confidential information is discussed,” said Nonhlanhla Dlamini, the acting director of the West Rand Corridor in the office of the MEC for Community Safety.

Kagiso Police station commander Brigadier Themba Maduna supported these sentiments and also urged the community of Soul City not to allow foreign illegal miners to infiltrate and take control of their areas, adding that these people may also show extreme brutality to defenceless children.

“Such people must be reported directly to my office for immediate attention,” he said.

Provincial GBV coordinator and femicide champion director Merita Ground urged women not to allow bullying, abuse and murder without taking any action, saying “Enough is enough”.

Captain Sibiya said the police will ensure that there is always consistent communication with Green Door ambassadors.

Green Door is located at 2846 Church Hill Street, Block B, Rietvallei Extension 1.
