Family, friends and faith

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Many years ago, I carried a little white coffin with the remains of our daughter in it. It was probably the most difficult experience of my life. But it wasn’t the only battle I have ever had. Times of darkness and doubt have at times brought me to my knees.

Today, as I look back on my life, I realise that I didn’t survive because I was brave, strong or clever. I survived because of the pillars in my life. My family, my parents, wife, children and, yes, my grandson have meant everything to me. But not just my family, my many amazing friends. Some I have never even met but they are friends in need and deed. I thank God for all of Krugersdorp that has done so much for me. I am what I am because of all of you. I love you and appreciate you.

Finally, last but not least, my faith. God has played a crucial role in my life. From my days at Krugersdorp High School to the day in early May 1981 when I preached my first sermon in this town. God has always been close to me.

If I can give you any advice today, build your life on family, friends and faith. It won’t stop the storms but it will get you through them.
