The long weekend in Gauteng has been characterised by accidents leading to about eight fatalities by Sunday September 26, the Gauteng Traffic Police said.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane said on Friday afternoon (September 24), a truck driver lost control of his truck tractor on the N12 just after the Kliprivier off-ramp, resulting in five people losing their lives. In a separate incident on Saturday (September 25), a driver lost control of his truck on the R24 next to Magaliesburg and bludgeoned into several vehicles, injuring one person critically. Three pedestrians lost their lives in separate accidents in Gauteng.
These accidents were as a result of many road users not adhering to the rules and regulations of the road. It is against this background that the Gauteng Traffic Police will continue to be on high alert to ensure the safety of road users. The Gauteng Traffic Police would like to issue a stern warning to all road users who continue to disregard the rules of the road that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
“The law-enforcement authorities will be out in full force to ensure compliance with road safety regulations.
“We call upon road users to adhere to the prescribed speed limits and to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on a road trip. The Gauteng Traffic Police also urge road users to be considerate towards one another as they travel to their various destinations. This will ensure that lives will be saved,” added Maremane.
Pedestrians are also urged to cross roads only when it is safe to do so. Controlled intersections such as traffic lights and pedestrian crossing signs where there are traffic officials are always the safest places to cross a road.
The Gauteng Traffic Police would like to extend its condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, and wish a speedy recovery to all those who are receiving medical treatment due to injuries sustained in various crashes.
