Crime gone wrong: Hijacker crashes into Metro Police vehicle and arrested

One criminal's fate was sealed when he crashed a hijacked vehicle into a Joburg Metro Police vehicle.

A man recently found himself on the wrong side of the law when he was caught after a botched hijacking. Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya explained the hijacking suspect was arrested on Impala Road on Friday, September 24.

Captain Sibiya said at about 21:30 that Friday night, a man was in the back room of his home in Swaneville when two men showed up. They found the door to the man’s house slightly open, kicked it and entered.

They demanded the victim’s vehicle keys at gunpoint. The victim tried to resist but the intruders assaulted him by hitting him with their firearm butts.”

The victim then surrendered his keys but was forced to drive the vehicle. After driving a little while the owner was forced into the back seat and one of the hijackers moved into the driver’s seat.

“A few minutes later the vehicle collided with a wall.”

That however, did not stop the hijackers and they drove on. On Impala Road next to Tshepisong, the driver lost control of the car again, this time colliding with a Johannesburg Metro Police vehicle. One of the hijackers managed to flee from the scene but the driver was trapped behind the steering wheel and subsequently arrested.

Two JMPD officers sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital. The arrested suspect who suffered minor injuries later was also taken into custody.”

He is facing charges of hijacking, kidnapping, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as reckless or negligent driving.

“Police will investigate further to establish if the suspect was involved in similar or other violent crimes before.”
