David and Goliath

If a boy could kill a giant, you can overcome your enemy.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Out of all the stories in the Bible, none are more famous than David and Goliath. A boy against a giant, armed and skilled in the art of war. Yet, thousands of years later this story is still told in Sunday school, church and, believe it or not, in boardrooms of secular companies.

Recently, as I read this story, I saw something that gave me hope. Since I was a child, my teachers and ministers painted the character of the devil like this giant. Using fear to control my life, this giant was my enemy.

David had no fear of his giant. With his sling and a few little stones, he faced what others feared.

David knew his giant was big, strong and armed to kill. But David also knew that God was bigger than his giant.

All of us face giants in our lives. His shadow over our lives is enough to paralyse us with fear. But today I remind you of a boy called David. He knew God was bigger than his Goliath. With confidence he faced his fears and won a famous victory. If a boy could kill a giant, you can overcome your enemy.

David could have faced Goliath in his own strength but the result would have been different. Close your eyes, kneel down and see your giant next to your God. The battle is not yours.
