Man who lied about stolen laptop arrested for perjury

A man thought he could lie to the cops about a stolen laptop but he was quickly caught out and arrested for perjury.

A man has been arrested and charged with perjury after he lied to Hekpoort Police about a stolen laptop.

Hekpoort Police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye explained that a 22-year-old man came into the police station and opened a theft case on October 11. He claimed that he left his laptop at his house and when he came home the laptop was nowhere to be found.

“The case was opened for investigation,” she said.

The case docket was assigned to Sergeant Simphiwe Gwala for investigation which revealed the man was lying about the theft of his laptop. Consequently he was placed under arrest and charged with perjury.

“Police would like to warn members of the community to refrain from giving false statements and laying false charges. Whoever tells lies under oath or affirmation will be charged with perjury,” said Sergeant Maswanganye.

The Hekpoort Police station commander Captain Tebogo Kgomo was pleased with the efforts of the members and especially Sergeant Gwala.

The man already appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 8 and the outcome is unknown at this stage.
