Traffic Police send warning after five arrests, just for speeding

Gauteng Traffic Police arrest five drivers for excessively speeding on Gauteng major routes – including N14 from Pretoria to Krugersdorp.

The Gauteng Traffic Police arrested five drivers for excessive speeding on Gauteng roads.

They were arrested between Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday morning (November 11) during the Gauteng Traffic Police High-speed Unit’s operations conducted on various major routes and freeways in Gauteng such as the N4 from Pretoria to Mpumalanga, the N14 from Pretoria to Krugersdorp, the N1 Pretoria to Johannesburg, and the R21 from Pretoria to OR Tambo International Airport.

Amongst those arrested suspects was a 44-year-old man who was caught driving a BMW 318 i at 216km per hour on a prescribed maximum limit of 120km per hour along the N4 from Pretoria towards Mpumalanga.

He was detained at the Bronkhorstspruit Police Station pending a bail application. All the other suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts to face charges relating to reckless or negligent driving, with an alternative charge of driving a vehicle exceeding the prescribed speed maximum limit of 120km per hour. The speedsters were driving at a speed of over 160km per hour on a prescribed maximum limit of 120km per hour.

Excessive driving is one of the common causes of road crashes resulting in fatalities. The Gauteng Traffic Police will ensure that high-speed operations are intensified in all corridors in an effort to enhance road safety,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police would like appeal to motorists at large to abide by the general speed limit of 120km per hour on Gauteng’s major routes. Anyone found endangering the lives of innocent road users by excessive driving will be severely punished,” added Maremane.
