Cop-musician wins big at annual music awards

Sergeant Lucky Matome also known as Scylash recently walked away as the winner of the New Amapionao artist category at the 2021 Mzanzi Kwaito and House Music Awards.

The awards event was held at the Sun City Superbowl on November 27. Although this was his third time being nominated, it was his first win.

Scylash said he knew about the nomination and his fans had to vote for him to win. This was his first-ever music award and as far as he knew he was the first West Rand artist to win it.

The song that secured him the win was called Lenyora, which he recorded towards the end of 2019 and released in 2020.

“It was a difficult category as it had big names but I had a very good campaign plan and I trusted my supporters.”

He said in most cases when he records he has sleepless nights as he has to juggle his day job, music career and his family.

“In a way I don’t have a social life.”

His music career is also self-funded and he said he sometimes had to ask close friends for assistance. The lack of sponsorship also made things more difficult, especially during Covid-19.

Last year was difficult for him as there were no gigs.

“Government tried to assist financially but as we all know greedy and corrupt people took the money meant for the artists for themselves. Most of the artists from my region did not get any assistance from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.”

But this also forced him to try other things, and he tapped into DJ-ing and learned how to market himself and his music better.

“I was on more national radio stations, and I managed to push my music video on TV. Initially we depended more on gigs and stuff, but due to what was happening last year I ended up learning how to actually market my music.”

So what does this award mean for Scylash? He believes this has changes everything and that he is no longer just an artist but an award-winning artist; explaining that when people come back from many years at medical school they are addressed as ‘doctor’. He has also spent many years as an artist and said, “Not to be funny, it is a status that I have worked hard for.

“It means a lot and I hope that now corporates will see that I am big business; they can invest in my music because that is what we need, we need each other, and we need to be assisted so that we can move forward. I am a brand now, so I need to associate myself with brands that need to be seen with a brand like me.”

He cannot thank his fans enough and said without them he would not have won. For the past three years he had witnessed their love for him every time he was nominated.

“They have proven to me that they always have my back. My fans have been showing me love and many of them went as far as printing and purchasing T-shirts with my name on them.”

He said he had been receiving messages of congratulations from everywhere – even one from Jakarumba from the well-known kwaito band Trompies.

“When you receive a message like that from a legend, it means a lot.”
