Hijackings across the West Rand District remain a great concern for police.
“There is an increase in hijackings around the West Rand area and we urge motorists to be cautious and vigilant, especially when they drive on the N12, N14, R41, R559, R500, R501, R563, M13, R24, R28 and Impala Road,” said West Rand District and Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane.
He added that criminals also pretend to be police.
They usually make use of white unmarked motor vehicles (sedans) or bakkies with blue lights. Some of the hijackers may indicate that you have a flat tyre and even show truck drivers that something has fallen from the truck.
“Recently, hijackers are taking vehicles in the suburbs while the victims are either opening or closing their gates.”
Police also shared some tips to help keep residents safe:
• Always drive with your doors locked.
• If you are being followed or suspect those who stopped you are not police, drive to the nearest police station and/ or a safe place.
• Do not stop when another driver shows you that you have a flat tyre or that something is wrong on your vehicle; rather drive to a nearby filling station.
• Do not pick up hitch-hikers.
• If strangers loiter or a suspicious vehicle is spotted near or at your driveway, rather drive past first.
• Limit your night trips or at least take someone along.
• Lovers are warned not to stop in isolated areas or next to a road.
Police are also reminding the community to adhere to Covid-19 protocols.
The public is further encouraged to report any criminal activity to their nearest police station immediately by contacting the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or using the My SAPS app or sending an SMS to 32211. You can remain anonymous.
