LETTER: My new year’s resolutions – Family, faith and food

It is important at the start of 2022 to have a vision, a plan of action.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

2022 is here. As with 2020 and 2021, we don’t have any idea what the new year holds.

With life itself so fragile, we don’t even know if we will have 365 days. But new year’s resolutions are not so much about what the new year holds as what you plan for the new year. A little line in the Bible reads, “Without a vision (a dream or plan), my people perish”. So, it is important at the start of 2022 to have a vision, a plan of action. My new year’s resolutions are family, faith and food.

I want to spend more time with my family. Not quality time, quantity time. Family is the most important thing we have.

I want to spend more time with God; yes, you read right. Not work more for him but spend more time with him. For far too long my focus was to do things for him because I thought he would love me more.

Maybe God wants us, not our works that are often self-serving. More time with God with no agenda or wish list.

Finally, food. We all love food. I was raised in a culture where the women make the food. Simple foods, braai, pressure cooker or just a golden, brown loaf of bread baked by yours truly. Wait! Don’t they go together, family, faith and food? Yes, they do.

Why not make a simple, fun new year’s resolution? Write it down and monitor it. Don’t wait for the year, make it happen.
