Two-hundred and seventeen people were arrested during a District-wide operation recently.
In a statement from Sergeant Audrey Sefara from the West Rand District Police communications she explained that Operation Save a Life was conducted in all 13 Districts from January 7 to 9.
These Districts included Kagiso, Krugersdorp, Muldersdrift, Hekpoort, Magaliesburg, Tarlton, Randfontein, Bekkersdal, Westonaria, Carletonville, Khutsong, Fochville and Wedela.
Sefara said these operations were conducted by different law-enforcement agencies, among them the police, Randwest Traffic, Mogale Traffic, Gauteng Traffic and the Department of Community Safety.
The operation was led by the District Police commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, and three roadblocks were held on major routes. At one of these roadblocks a white Toyota Corolla linked to a December 2021 case was recovered in Kagiso.
Fines with a total value of R54 050 were issued an six illegally operated liquor outlets were closed and the liquor confiscated.
The more than 200 suspects were arrested for the following crimes:
• One for murder
• One for hijacking
• One for business robbery
• One for house robbery
• One for statutory rape
• 39 for assault with the intention of causing grievous body harm
• One for armed robbery
• Two for common robbery
• Seven for housebreaking and theft
• Eight for common assault (domestic violence)
• Ten for contravention of a protection order
• 40 for driving under the influence of liquor
• One for driving under the influence of liquor and malicious damage to property
• One for attempted business burglary
• 12 for theft
• Three for possession of stolen property
• Eight for possession of gold-bearing material
• Ten for possession of dagga
• 19 for possession of drugs
• One for pointing a firearm
• Two for possession of a dangerous weapon
• 17 for malicious damage to property
• One for defeating the ends of justice
• One for contempt of court
• One for absconding
• Nine for dealing in liquor without a valid liquor licence
• One for dealing in liquor and possession of drugs
• Six for contravention of the Mine Safety Act
• 11 for being undocumented persons
• One for failure to comply with the Disaster Management Act
Sefara said Kekana thanked all the members and other law-enforcement members for availing themselves whenever duty calls to maintain law and order, and to keep our community safe.
All those who were arrested will appear in various magistrates’ courts soon to face their different charges.”
