Grade 1s start 2022 at St Ursula’s … with Harry the Hamster

The usual tradition of welcoming parents and their first graders to the school premises created overall excitement that probably was last experienced before the pandemic, but it was a moment in the classroom that really moved the News.

St Ursula’s School welcomed its new Grade 1s in the cutest fashion on Wednesday January 12.

Early that morning, the tradition of welcoming parents and their first graders to the school premises created overall excitement that probably was last experienced before the pandemic.

According to Jill Thatcher, member of the school management team and in charge of admissions and marketing, St Ursula’s School welcomed 20 Grade 1 learners this year.

“Everything went according to plan. Kids were all very happy to be back at school and settled in nicely. We see a bright future for the learners as they seem eager to learn and are school-ready,” she said.

The excitement had subsided somewhat when the News visited Grade 1 teacher Mrs Nerine Pitt’s classroom, where children were already hard at work drawing and colouring-in. Mrs Pitt then asked the group to gather around a table where she introduced Harry, a cute little hamster, which had the kids in awe.

One of the little boys even asked if Harry could have a sleepover at his house and when Mrs Pitt replied that she didn’t really think so, he said, “But my cats are very friendly!”

Harry has since been dubbed the official Grade 1 class hamster.
