Police and other law enforcement agencies again joined forces to clamp down on crime in the West Rand District over the weekend.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Boboko said from February 4 to February 6 they focused on crime prevention, visiting liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealerships, held roadblocks and traced wanted suspects.
“These operations also focused on stop-and-searches for transportation of stolen goods, vehicles and/ or hijacked vehicles, illegal firearms and drugs.”
He said a total of 127 suspects were arrested as a result which included 65 arrests which was made during an Okae Molao operation held specifically on February 5 between 19:30 and 01:00 in the Fochville and Wedela areas.
Suspects were arrested for the following:
• Two for common assault (domestic violence)
• Eight for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm
• Three for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property
• One for assault and intimidation
• Two for armed robbery
• One for common robbery
• Four for malicious damage to property and house breaking with the intent to commit an offence
• Four for housebreaking and theft
• One for theft of a motor vehicle
• One for malicious damage to property and theft
• Six for theft
• Four for possession of copper cable
• Four for possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal immigrants
• Two for possession of an unlicensed and ammunition
• Three attempted murder
• 34 for driving while under the influence of alcohol
• One for driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest
• Eight for possession of drugs
• One for possession of a stolen vehicle
• One for dealing in dagga
• One for possession of dagga
Other crimes included business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of stolen property, arson, pointing a firearm, contravention of a protection order, shoplifting, mine health and safety act, reckless and negligent driving, dealing in liquor without a license, possession of a dangerous weapon, drinking in public, drunk and disorderly, possession of mine property and being an illegal immigrant.
Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner applauded the teams who commit themselves to continue protecting and ensuring that the community is safe and that criminals are brought to book.
