Young thief jailed to six years: Why? He stole from his grandma

A man in his late 20s who stole his grandmother's bank card, cash as well as cellphone was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Krugersdorp Magistrates' Court.

A man from Krugersdorp West was convicted and sentenced to six years direct imprisonment. The reason? He stole from his grandmother.

According to Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane the 28-year-old Marico Viljoen was convicted and sentenced in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court recently.

The complainant (grandmother) said she went to sleep on Thursday, January 27 this year, and left her grandson Viljoen awake.

“The complainant further alleged that she put her handbag inside the cupboard before she went to sleep. After waking up the next morning at about 06:00, she went to fetch her bag and noticed that her bank card, R1 300 in cash as well as a cellphone were missing.

She went looking for Viljoen and found that he was not at home. She went to the bank and found out that R4 500 had been withdrawn from her bank account.”

A case of theft was opened and registered with the Krugersdorp Police. Detective Sergeant Trevor Nhlapo investigated the case and arrested Viljoen.

The case was then assigned to detective Sergeant Mapula Ndlovu who made sure that VIljoen was convicted and sentenced.

Krugersdorp Police station commander Brigadier Happy Xaba applauded the members for a job well done.
