LETTER: Solving problems in a coffee shop

Christianity is not about avoiding problems but solving them with God’s help – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

The people of Mogale City, my home town, often spot me enjoying coffee in a coffee shop with a friend.

You may ask, “Do I enjoy coffee or do I enjoy friends?” Truth be told, I enjoy both.

But what I appreciate most is learning from others. Recently I had coffee with a friend who works at a big financial institution. He told me the most amazing fact about his sector, banking.

His bosses are not bankers and their background is not finances. Wait, their training is engineering. Yes, you got that right. It made no sense to me until he told me why.

Engineers are trained to solve problems. It was then that the penny dropped. Sorry for the pun. If you want to enjoy a successful marriage, you must be able to solve problems. If you want to be a good parent, you must be able to solve problems. Education is important, skills are essential, but the key to success is a God-given ability to solve problems.

Christianity is not about avoiding problems but solving them with God’s help. All it took was a coffee and a friend and a desire to learn.
