LETTER: Stop the world

Make a cup of coffee, close the door and open your mind. Slow down, smell the roses, before you know it your life is over - local pastor.

Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Time really flies. On Wednesday it is almost Friday. Christmas is just before Easter and then it is a bit of a gap before the end of the year. Deadlines, targets and cutoffs are terms we all understand. We live stressful lives with no time to stop.

Looking back on my life I now realise how many mistakes I have made that I would not have made if I had time to think. But the system does not allow us to think. The special is only for today; the prices will go up or someone else will get it if you don’t sign now.

Busy, busy all the time with no time to think. Please stop the world for a moment.

A very successful businessman was asked to describe his day. Then the question became more focused. What is the most important thing you do every day that leads to your success? Without missing a beat, he said, “I make time to think”. One of the pillars of Christianity is daily meditation. Meditation is time to think. Jesus did it and you and I should practise the discipline of daily times to think.

Make a cup of coffee, close the door and open your mind. Slow down, smell the roses; before you know it your life is over.

On the bulletin at your funeral will be a date of birth and a date of death. Between the two, a dash. That dash is your life. Think about that today.
