Archery club to move after vandalism

Never any problems until recently, says chairperson.

The West Rand Bow Hunters Archery Club will relocate after 13 years at the same address.

This comes after the premises has fallen prey to a number of criminal incidents in the past few months, culminating in another incident this week where cables and other steel infrastructure were stolen. Chairperson of the club, Fred Baan, told the News that they never had any crime-related problems at the club until about three or four months ago when incidents started becoming frequent. But this week’s was the worst – cables were ripped from the ground, the clubhouse’s window fittings were stripped, the toilets destroyed and the water tank tilted over in order for the criminals to steal the steel structure on which it was standing. Consequently Baan has decided to move the club’s activities to his farm nearby.

Only the shell of the clubhouse was left after criminals stripped it of all metal features. Photos submitted.

One supporter of the club called the destruction “disgusting”. “We try to create something positive in our little world here on the West Rand. This club has delivered so many champions of all ages in the sport. I am so angry at what they have done,” he said.

Anyone who needs information on the new location can contact Baan on 073 998 3872.
