According to the mayoral spokesperson, Palesa Molefe, CoGTA commended MCLM’s strong financial recovery on August 28, which includes a R355.5m surplus this year, improved liquidity with cash reserves rising to R299.9m, as well as reduced borrowings.
“The municipality was further acknowledged for maintaining up-to-date accounts with Eskom and Rand Water, achieving a 90% revenue collection rate, and increasing investments in critical service delivery,” she said.
The mayor was grateful for the recognition.
“The committee’s feedback confirms that the institution is rising from the ashes and is steadily building a financially sustainable and service-driven municipality.
This reflects the hard work of our council, administration and community stakeholders who continue to support our vision of a resilient and inclusive urban city centre,” he added.
Molefe said despite this milestone in stabilising finances and improving services, they still have some challenges that remain.
“However, through strong intergovernmental relations, continued collaboration with external stakeholders, these obstacles can and will be overcome,” she said.
Sele continued that with continued collaboration, MCLM will not only maintain this positive trajectory but also push further to ensure service delivery excellence and inclusive growth for all residents.
Some readers shared mixed reactions to the achievement on social media:
Ntombizanele Mncube said, “Congratulations to the executive mayor, Lucky Sele and the team for achieving remarkable progress in service delivery and ensuring financial stability for our municipality. This reflects true leadership, accountability, and a commitment to building a better future for all residents.”
Another resident, Prince Mlungisi Ndamase, said, “People who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those who are doing it. The future of Mogale City is bright.”
Sheila Legobye said their billing is atrocious [sic].
No wonder they are doing better on revenue collection. My rates have doubled in less than six months!” Sheila said.
Gaynor Lawrence concluded, “Best they start using the money to clean up the town, it’s a disgrace- we pay a fortune every month for a small business in Chamdor – excessively overcharged for electricity, not to mention a faulty, broken water meter that we’ve asked for over a year to be repaired. You need to send an environmental team to have a look at the company next door that’s killing us slowly with the white powder – it’s a health and environmental hazard.”
