Sober up or get locked up – 107 arrested for drunk driving
Stay sober or face arrest, warn police after 107 drunk driving arrests in high-density weekend operations across Johannesburg and the West Rand.
The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) warns against driving under the influence of alcohol.
This follows recent high-density operations and Operation Shanela, where law enforcement agencies arrested over 465 suspects across the province, including 107 for drunk driving.
According to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane, the operations took place in crime hotspots throughout the West Rand and the City of Johannesburg.
“Sixty-six suspects were arrested in the West Rand District Municipality. These arrests include 43 made during Operation Shanela, seven for contravention of the Immigration Act, and seven for driving under the influence of alcohol. In total, 1 134 people and 330 vehicles were searched in the area, targeting Kagiso, Fochville, Carletonville, and Westonaria.”
He added that a total of 91 arrests were made in Johannesburg. These included 62 people for violating immigration laws, 10 for drug possession, and nine for driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Over a thousand people and 482 vehicles were searched in the city. The operations targeted Honeydew, Booysens, Cosmo City, Roodepoort, Eldorado Park, and Lenasia, among others,” he added.
“Law enforcement officials are making strides to address lawlessness in the province. To this end, motorists are urged to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, as it poses a safety risk, and those found will be apprehended,” he concluded.
