Three armed robbers caught en route to Krugersdorp

Three men linked to a multi-province armed robbery spree were nabbed on the N14 en route to Krugersdorp.

Three armed robbers, believed to be involved in a crime spree across Gauteng and the Northern Cape, were arrested by police while travelling on the N14 toward Krugersdorp.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner in the North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, said the three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.

According to Asaneng, the police were on patrol when they spotted and stopped a white Nissan Micra at the N14 and R30 intersection between Krugersdorp and Klerksdorp on July 3.

He said that after stopping the car, two men jumped out in an attempt to escape.

A rifle was found inside the car.

“Police searched the car, which led to the discovery of a rifle with its serial number removed, two pistols and 18 rounds of ammunition.”

The suspects, aged 27, 40 and 45, were immediately arrested because they could not account for the firearms and ammunition.

“Initial investigations linked two firearms with cases reported in February and April in Soshanguve and Diepsloot, with Gauteng Province linking the three men to two armed robberies.

”After further investigation, the North West team confirmed and verified with their counterparts in Kuruman that the suspects were linked to a business robbery committed on July 2,” Asaneng concluded.
