Azaadville burglary ends in dramatic arrests
A routine patrol in the West Rand led to a major bust after police recovered stolen cellphones, unlicensed firearms and drugs valued at R9 000.
The Johannesburg Flying Squad responded quickly when a burglary in Azaadville on January 7 led them to Hillbrow.
According to Johannesburg Rapid Response spokesperson Raymond Sambo, police were patrolling the area when security officers requested back-up after a cellphone was stolen during the burglary.
He said they proceeded to Edith and Cavell Street in Hillbrow, where a white VW Polo was stopped, and seven cellphones linked to the burglary were recovered.
One person was arrested on the spot and led police to a taxi rank, where a second person was apprehended. Both then led police to two properties in Vlakfontein, near Lenasia South, where officers recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition, a police uniform, and drugs with a street value of R9 000.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 33, were detained at Kagiso Police Station and charged with possession of stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of drugs.
The vehicle was booked at the pound for safekeeping and further investigation, Sambo added.
Both suspects are expected to appear in court soon. Anyone with additional information can contact the relevant station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
