West Village — Tensions flared at a West Village repatriation centre on July 21 after an inmate died, prompting a police response before the situation was brought under control.
According to West Rand Flying Squad spokesperson Karen du Plessis, a riot broke out at the centre following the death of an inmate during the morning.
The Krugersdorp News was outside the centre at about 11:30 when several police vehicles entered the premises to help restore order.
“They [other inmates] did not want the body to be removed and started to riot,” said Du Plessis.
Shortly after noon, the News was informed that the situation had been de-escalated.
