Mogale City Response Services urge public to keep safe in winter

Fire season is upon us and it is now a perfect time to learn preventative measures.

With winter fast approaching, many residents will be looking at ways to stay warm which include the use of electrical, gas, and paraffin heaters. While the public is advised to take extreme care at home they are also cautioned against open veld fires.

Regional commander of the Mogale City Response Services Gerhard Niewoudt assured the public that they along with the Krugersdorp Fire Department are here to assist residents by giving them safety measures to learn to stay safe and prevent winter fires with their fire safety awareness initiative.

”Fire safety starts at home,” said Niewoudt.

Here is a list of measures that they encourage residents to follow to prevent veld fires:

• Ensure that there is at least a 30m clearing outside your home, and ensure that trees and gardens are not close to the house
• Always have some kind of extinguishing equipment ready to assist to put the fire out should it occur
• Cut the grass and garden very short outside the home
• Remove flammable rubbish such as empty petrol bottles, empty nail polish remover, and spilled oil outside your homes and on the road

The response services also encouraged the community to call them should they require fire rescue by contacting the emergency operation centre on 011 951 3030 or simply dialing 112 on their cell.
