Taking the pledge: Mayor’s new committee sworn in

Mogale City Local Municipality mayor Danny Thupane recently appointed his new team of advisors and his mayoral committee who were officially affirmed.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) mayor councillor Danny Thupane’s new team of advisors, as well as the mayoral committee, were sworn in at a special council meeting recently.

A statement from the MCLM said the new political office bearers were affirmed during the 23rd special council meeting sitting that was held at the council chambers on May 31.

“The political administration is colloquially referred to as the government of local unity and is a coalition made up of the ATM, EFF, and ANC. The office bearers were affirmed under the judicial supervision of Chief Magistrate Abdul Khan of the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court.”

Speaker of the council and chairperson of the Mogale City legislature, Lucke Sele opened by saying, “It is an honour to serve as a councillor in one’s community. In acknowledgement of the importance of the trust placed on us in service of our communities, Rule 54 of the Council Rules of Orders, mandates all local government officials to solemnly affirm before a judicial officer upon taking office.”

Mogale City Chief Whip councillor Tsholofelo Ramaise was affirmed as an office bearer by Chief Magistrate Abdul Khan of the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court.

This affirmation, which was more just a formality, saw Thupane, Sele and chief whip Tsholofelo Ramaisa as well as 10 other members of the mayoral committee pledging to uphold and fulfil the standards and obligations for which they were appointed.

Thupane concluded the first session of council sitting by informing the audience that his team was ready to govern.
“Doomsayers who thought that the ANC-EFF-ATM coalition will fizzle like a morning breeze, need to think again.”

He said the affirmation of office bearers means Mogale City now has a stable governance team that will play a role in ensuring that the city occupies strategic positions again. He also indicated that the affirmation process will allow office bearers to implement the policies of the municipality to better the lives of residents.
