Meet Monument’s ‘tyre-killer’ potholes

Why do the Monument Mall slipway potholes keep coming back?

Several potholes on the left-hand side of Voortrekker Road in Monument keep collapsing.

To be precise, the potholes are situated on Voortrekker Road as one enters the slipway into Monument Mall (where Hennie’s and Big Five Meat Market are situated). These potholes have been a reoccurring issue for the Krugersdorp community, with motorists having to spend hundreds if not thousands of rands on damaged tyres and rims.

“I lost three wheels in one day when I hit the potholes,” said Tanja Avenant, a motorist who could not swerve out in time.

Although the potholes were filled on April 3, they reappeared five days later.

Mogale City Local Municipality could not answer how many times the potholes were filled but their communication officer Refilwe Mahlangu said, “The municipality acknowledges the recurring issue with the pothole in question despite our repeated efforts to address it. The affected area is situated at a low point in the road with water collecting during rainstorms which drains away slowly.”

She also said that the work had been done by competent workers and was up to standard.

When the Krugersdorp News again reached out for further comment on why the drainage system has not been lowered or the road elevated, a response was not given by the time of going to print.
