Embankment on R28 north in dire state

For nearly a year, safety has become a concern for motorists who drive on the R28 northbound.

The embankment on the R28 north towards Silverstar Casino is on the verge of collapse and the safety of motorists is of grave concern.

According to ward councillor Shenan Cochrane, for nearly a year there have been calls on Mogale City’s Department of Roads and Transport to maintain this part of the R28 road; however, those demands have still not been answered.

“During a recent oversight inspection on the road, we discovered that the embankment and the road are in a terrible state. Blocked drainage has resulted in severe water erosion. This is a disaster waiting to happen, and should it not be urgently attended to, it could lead to the loss of life.”

Cochrane added that this is one of the busiest roads into and out of the city.

“Many trucks carrying heavy loads use this road to bring goods into the province. During the oversight, we have engaged with engineers who indicated that it is most likely that the embankment and road will collapse during the next rainy season.

“We will continue to fight for the road maintenance budget to be used to benefit road users,” she said.

The Krugersdorp News approached Mogale City’s Department of Roads and Transport for comment concerning the state of the embankment, however, no feedback has been given at the time of print. Their feedback will be published once received.
