Non-compliant businesses targeted by authorities

Law enforcement and the municipality took part in a multi-disciplinary operation to bust businesses operating illegally.

Councillor Mark Trump led a multi-disciplinary operation in parts of Krugersdorp North as well as the CBD to clamp down on any health, safety and legal standard violations at businesses.

According to Trump, the team who assisted during the operation included the police, Mogale City Public Safety, Mogale City Business Licensing, and the West Rand District Municipality’s (WRDM) Health and Social Development Department.

Trump revealed that two shop operators were detained until they could provide valid documentation, and three shops were ordered to close due to numerous non-compliance issues. Officials cited several violations, including the sale of illegal cigarettes, unauthorised gas sales, use of business premises for sleeping, sale of illicit food products, employment of undocumented foreign nationals, lack of business consent for operating, and the employment of minors.

“It is with grave concern that we address these health standards with strong enforcement and teamwork within all government departments. With the recent deaths in Naledi, Soweto and most recently a young girl in Alexandra, these operations must happen regularly,” Trump expressed.

“It was witnessed by myself today that a lot of these business operators have no respect for law enforcement and the inspectors doing their job to protect the community. These business owners need to take this matter seriously as we will have zero tolerance for non-compliance going forward. The departments will be clamping down harder on these businesses who choose to be arrogant and not comply with the national and municipal by-laws,” Trump warned.

He concluded notices of strict adherence were issued to those non-compliant and had 30 days to rectify.
