Mogale City Museum renovations grind to a halt
Renovation work at the Mogale City Museum has been halted due to a roof-funding issue.
Residents will have to wait a little longer to visit the Mogale City Museum as a result of the roof not being in the best condition. The cost involved is reported to be over R12 million.
According to Mogale City ward councillor Mark Trump, the museum was initially supposed to open in June 2024, however, it has been postponed several times.
”There are many parts that need attention; the priority was the roof and walls. I will continue to advocate for the development of this heritage site and apply it to the ward inputs,” Trump said.
Trump also confirmed that the building took years to have its budget approved for its refurbishment.
“The 2023/2024 financial year saw its budget finally being approved, and finally, renovations could get underway in March 2024. The project saw 36 workers refurbishing the building. The bricks laid were over 150 years old and had historical remnants; however, some of the foundations needed to be preserved and modernised so it could have that authentic and vintage look from when it was originally built.
“Much of the windows and doors removed will not be replaced, instead, they will be polished and put back in place. Hence, MCLM is working with specialised engineers and workers who know how to handle the material. In addition to that, security will be enhanced to ensure the safety of the property and the objects inside.
”As the ward councillor, I engaged with the contractor, and they supplied a protective fence around the property for added security at no cost to MCLM,” Trump said
No new date or confirmation has been given as yet as to when the museum will be open to the public.
