Community unites to remove illegal posters, restore CBD
The Krugersdorp West Full Gospel Church is calling on residents to join a CBD cleanup aimed at removing illegal stickers and raising youth awareness about responsible choices.
With many stop signs, electrical boxes and public spaces in the CBD falling into neglect, the Krugersdorp West Full Gospel Church has stepped in to raise awareness about the issue and encourage the community to help clean up the area.
According to pastor Tona Morake from the church, this is an appeal to the community and public stakeholders to revamp the inner city of Mogale City.
He urges residents to join in removing specifically abortion and loan shark stickers or posters.
“The subject regarding the practice is a sensitive one because of public and religious opinions,” he said.
According to Councillor Mark Trump, the stickers are illegal as they infringe on outdoor advertising and municipal by-laws.
He mentioned that outdoor advertising in South Africa is governed by municipal by-laws and national legislation, which require authorisation for billboards visible from public roads. Laws address safety, aesthetic and environmental concerns, regulating the size, placement and visibility of signs. The Advertising Boards Act and municipal by-laws dictate specifications, and permits must be renewed annually.
“However, most of the stickers will have a contact number but without the business registration,” Trump said.
Morake added that his biggest concern is the youth of Mogale City with regard to the stickers.
“While we understand that we can not get involved in the personal decisions of individuals, we warn them to be careful regarding these so-called clinics. We understand people are desperate, but we urge them not to be manipulated by bogus medical professionals who will take advantage of youth,” Morake cautioned.
Aiming to remove stickers and posters, the church, together with other stakeholders, will gather on Market Street in the Krugersdorp CBD from 08:00 on November 15. They also plan to clean up the CBD.
“The purpose of the clean-up is also to promote planned parenthood and encourage responsible decision-making among the youth,” Morake concluded.
