What’s changing in Mogale City: Key updates for residents
From new malls and industrial zones to youth programmes and CBD renewal, here’s what Mogale residents need to know from the latest IDP update.
Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) is reportedly stepping up efforts to boost economic growth and strengthen partnerships across key industries.
Executive Mayor Lucky Sele, joined by MMC for Local Economic Development Lwando Resha, hosted the 2025/ 26 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) feedback session this week with representatives from the Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMME), tourism and agricultural sectors at the Mayoral Chambers.
Sele said these engagements form part of the municipality’s ongoing service-delivery roadshows, aimed at reporting on progress since the approval of the 2025/ 26 IDP and Budget.
Key progress updates included:
• Leratong Smart City: Construction of the mall is underway, with the housing development phase expected to begin soon.
• Kagiso Agri-Park: Funding has been secured for an Agri-Park that will support agricultural innovation, training and market access.
• Swaneville Industrial Park: Phase 1 is progressing well. Water and sewer infrastructure has been completed, and work on the electricity network is in progress. Plans for a new mall are advancing, with an advertisement for developers expected soon.
• Mining partnerships: Collaborations with Mogale Tailing and Harmony Gold are being strengthened to support local SMMEs and ensure mining companies meet their social responsibility commitments.
• Small-scale mining: The municipality is working with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to explore formalising small-scale mining, aiming to curb illegal operations (zama zamas) while creating regulated economic opportunities.
In tourism and urban renewal, a Public-Private Partnership opportunity has been advertised for the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, inviting investors to redevelop, fund and manage the facility. As part of the CBD Precinct Revitalisation Plan, a proposed by-law offering temporary rates and levies relief for owners of dilapidated buildings is under review to encourage inner-city reinvestment.
Sele also reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to youth and business development through internships, learnerships, work-integrated learning programmes, and the incubation of SMMEs for three years under the mayor’s office. Engagements with sectors such as Sports and Recreation, Creative Arts, Culture and Heritage, Youth, Community-Based Organisations, the Disability Sector and the Religious Sector will continue this week as part of the IDP roadshow.
