The natural environment of the Kenmare Kloof protected area is under severe threat from pollution and unlawful dumping.

Kenmare Kloof Conservation Association (KKCA) chairperson Desmond Liebenberg said the kloof is home to diverse indigenous vegetation, wildlife, insects, fungi and plant species, but pollution remains a major concern.

Dumping and fire hazards

He said some residents living along the boundary dump garden waste over their fences. When the waste accumulates, it is sometimes set alight, causing fires that spread into the kloof.

Liebenberg warned that people caught dumping waste in the area could be fined.

Sewer pipe blockages

Another concern is sewage pollution caused by items such as wet wipes being flushed down toilets. Liebenberg said these items can block a main sewer pipe running through the kloof, resulting in sewage overflowing into the area and nearby botanical garden.

As a nationally protected environmental area, access to the kloof is also subject to conservation requirements. Liebenberg said controlled access helps protect the environment, prevent further damage and ensure conservation work is conducted safely.
