To test the gender-equality ‘temperature’ in South Africa, the News spoke to those people who say what they think without holding back: our children.

Q: Should men be paid more than women for the same job?
A: Women and men should get the same pay because they studied for the same qualification and same number of years. Every day, women have to fight for their rights so I think women and men should get the same pay – that’s the least the system (businesses) can do for them.

V: Vir wie is die lewe in Suid-Afrika die gemaklikste, vir mans of vir vroue?
A: Mans word beter behandel. In huidige Suid-Afrika kan ons duidelik sien dat geslagsgeweld ‘n groot probleem is en dit moet verander. Almal het ‘n ma en dus moet ons dit ‘n norm maak om die vroue in ons lewens te ‘uplift’ en ’empower’. PS: Love you mams

Q: Who is the ‘boss’ in your house?
A: My mom is the boss at home ’cause she’s strong. Without mom, nothing is the same at home.

V: Wie’s baas in julle huis?
A: My ma en pa is ewe belangrik vir my en my siblings. Daar is nie ‘n ‘boss’ of waarnemer van dinge in die huis nie. Hulle al twee het ‘n groot verantwoordelikheid om na ons te kyk, so daar is nie iemand ‘groter’ as iemand anders in die gesin nie.

V: Behoort mans meer as vroue vir dieselfde werk betaal te word?
A: Vroue moet dieselfde betaal word as mans, nie net omdat dit regverdig is nie maar ek weet eerstehands dat my ma een van die hardwerkendste vroue is. Sy sit baie lang ure in. Sy is my idol. Dankie ma!
