Music producer has the answers for troubled youth

'We would like to work within our Krugersdorp community to clean our streets as there is a lot of crime. Drugs are killing our children and messing up the future of the African child'.

A local music producer has made it his mission to help clean up the streets of Krugersdorp by giving the youth the opportunity to make something of themselves in the music business and get their lives back on track.

The 42-year-old Itayi Majaji hails from Zimbabwe but has been living in Krugersdorp for the past few years. He started his music career at the age of 15 by playing drums in the church choir.

In 1999 he was employed by a recording studio and worked as an assistant sound engineer before becoming a music producer himself in 2001. He produced music for a wide range of musicians and eventually opened his own studio in Krugersdorp. Rhymes Studios is a portable home-based studio facility.

Itayi produces different genres like Amapiano, Jazz, Reggae, Gospel and Rock. One day he would like to produce music for big-name South African and international artists.

But apart from his love of music he also loves his community and more specifically helping the youth on the right path.

We would like to work within our Krugersdorp community to clean our streets as there is a lot of crime. I believe it is my duty to uphold the environment we live in, foreigner or not. Drugs are killing our children and messing up the future of the African child.”

Itayi explained that young people love music and taverns, but no one takes an interest in the young people. He would like this love of music to be cultivated and used as something positive instead of the youngsters just hanging out in taverns. Many youths have talent but they lack the resources to do something with that talent. One such example is a local DJ that he works with called Katlego or KG.

He wants to give more youths a shot at the music world, adding that the music world is not only about recording and singing but has various aspects and departments such as marketing, advertising, sales and more.

We need partnership to help us reach broader spaces; there is a lot the youth can do for our community.”

He invites stakeholders to assist them to host workshops and promo activities to refocus children away from these social ills.

He also wants the artists to host events in an effort to raise donations of food and clothes to help the elderly and disabled.
