She received the call at 15:08 on Thursday, September 22, and phoned the ambulance and fire department. She was also informed that a woman was still inside the burning shack.

She immediately went to the scene where the woman, believed to have been pregnant, had sadly passed away. Cochrane said the fire department’s response time was excellent as they arrived at the scene shortly after her.

Fire services secured the scene and the matter is being investigated by Muldersdrift police.

“We are not sure what caused the fire and it will be investigated. I must, however, commend the Mogale Fire Services team for their quick response and professionalism at this tragic scene, and to Christine Plaatjie, a Video resident, who called me so quickly to get assistance.

When communities and officials work together effectively in emergencies it makes all the difference. My condolences to the victim’s family and friends at this very sad time,” Cochrane said.
