Tips to cope during a water outage
Five tips that can be useful seeing that West Rand residents are in a tight water spot.
With many scrambling to get water just to take a shower, and considering the current predicament West Rand residents are in, Joburg Water has released some useful tips to follow during a water outage.
• Ensure all the taps are always closed
This is to ensure that when the water supply is restored, there won’t be any leaking taps or water gushing out, causing flooding and water wastage. Leaving taps open also adds air into the water recirculation system, resulting in airlocks (air in the pipe blocks water flow).

• Switch off your geyser
When there is no water supply and the geyser runs dry, the element could overheat. It’s like putting on a kettle with no water.
• Store enough water beforehand
This is to ensure you have enough water to drink, cook, and flush the toilet.
• Keep your water supply in a cold, dark place
Heat and sunlight can impair water quality.
• Be mindful and considerate when collecting water from tankers
Take just enough to reserve some water for fellow residents coming after you.
