Filling 500 tummies for Mandela Day

Hosting its third Mandela Day event, the A Ray of Hope organisation has continued to give hope where it is needed.

When A Ray of Hope first opened its doors to the vulnerable community of Krugersdorp West four years ago, they never thought that one day they would feed almost 500 people for Mandela Day. And that is exactly what they did recently.

Ronelle Sinden, councillor Whitey Moleba and Nathassia Engelbrecht.

Nathassia Engelbrecht, the founder of this organisation, said they were very blessed to be able to help so many people on Mandela Day. Before they opened their doors to the community, the line for a warm cup of soup and a piece of bread stood around the corner with men, women and children waiting with anticipation.

Everyone even got a fresh piece of fruit.

She explained that with the help of the community, and 11 businesses, they were also able to give away 300 hygiene packs filled with toiletries along with sweet treats, clothes, toys, fruit, and books to 150 children. There was also face painting for all the children and one of the highlights was when local singer Kay-Bee (Bianca King) sang for the community.

Mischa Engelbrecht and Aeysha Mostert dished up the soup.

The team from the organisation was also joined by the RCS Church, the Department of Social Development, ward councillor Whitey Moleba and the Miss and Mr West Rand winners.

Everyone could choose from the donations.

“What an amazing day serving the less fortunate in our community. We cannot thank our sponsors and volunteers enough, without you this day would not have been possible,” their post on Facebook read.
