Veld fire poses major threat near schools

Mogale City Response Services and other first responders had to contain a fire that posed a threat to two schools on Thursday night.

Emergency services had to rush to an out-of-control veld fire near HTS Nic Diederichs THS and Townview High School on Thursday night (August 2).

The Krugersdorp News was able to confirm that several emergency services including AfriForum, the West Rand District Fire Department, Krugersdorp Fire Station (Station 38), Mogale City Public Safety, and First Help responded to a call at about 20:00.

According to Mogale City’s Response Services spokesperson Dale Mac Rae, on arrival, the fire was specifically endangering unused buildings on the premises of Townview High School, however, the fire was contained to prevent more damage to surrounding property or residential areas.

“The fire department with the assistance from AfriForum patrollers and First Help contained the fire with the fire department doing back burns to ensure the fire was kept away from structures and then completely contained,” confirmed Mac Rae.
