18 people injured after three vehicle crash near Kagiso

A crash between three vehicles including a minibus taxi just a few metres from the bridge between Kagiso and Randfontein left at least 18 people injured.

At least 18 people were injured after a minibus taxi, a light motor vehicle and a bakkie collided on the R41 Road between Kagiso and Randfontein on Monday.

Rand West City’s Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo confirmed that 18 occupants sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. He added that there were no fatalities.

“One person was transported to Leratong Hospital with critical injuries while four others sustained serious injuries and 13 people sustained minor injuries. Subsequently, the situation was handed over to the Randfontein Police.”

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya stated that the accident happened around 07:30.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage.

“The accident happened just a few metres from the bridge between Kagiso and Randfontein. The driver of the bakkie stated that he was travelling towards Randfontein while the Renault was travelling in the direction of Kagiso. The driver of the taxi was not in a stable condition to provide police with a statement and was rushed to the hospital,” Sibiya concluded.

Mampondo stated that multiple emergency services and other resources attended to the scene. This includes five ambulances, the Krugersdorp Fire Brigade, the Rand West City Traffic Department and the Randfontein Police.
