KHS cricketer dies following on-field freak accident
Tragedy struck KHS cricket over the weekend when a Grade 12 learner died after a freakish on-field collision with a teammate.
Krugersdorp High School (KHS), the community at large and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) are shocked by the tragic death of a matric learner after a cricket match on Saturday, February 1.
In a statement issued on the school’s Facebook page, the learner, Retshegofetse Sennelo, died as a result of a freak accident.
“Sennelo sustained a severe injury after colliding with a teammate at Christian Brothers’ College Boksburg.”
School principal Ivan Bailey added that paramedics arrived on the scene and Retshegofetse was taken to hospital.
”After undergoing an emergency operation at Sunward Park, the surgeons could not stop the internal bleeding and he passed away in theatre on Saturday night. Our deepest condolences go out to the school governing body chairperson, Retshegofetse’s brother, family members and KHS staff who were at the hospital with me. Our prayers go out to Retshegofetse’s beloved teammates and coaches who will need our unequivocal support along with his friends at school,” Bailey said.
The GDE has since dispatched its Psycho-Social Support team to provide counselling to learners, educators, and all those impacted by this tragic event. Furthermore, the department will engage both schools to assess safety protocols surrounding school sporting activities.
GDE MEC Matome Chiloane also wished to extend his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, KHS and the entire school sporting community.
We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman.
“Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community. We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time,” Chiloane said.
The Krugersdorp News has attempted to make contact with the family and will continue to do so.
