Short film aims to rewrite Munsieville’s story
Local filmmaker Mfanelo Joko hopes to challenge negative perceptions of Munsieville through his upcoming short film, which aims to highlight the township’s positive stories among others.
Munsieville is often associated with poverty, unemployment, and crime. However, one local filmmaker is determined to challenge that perception by producing a short film that aims to reshape how people see the township and highlight its untold stories and positive potential.

Munsieville Missteps, a short film written and directed by Mfanelo Joko, is in its final stages of production, and it aims to send a profound message to not only the residents of Munsieville but also the West Rand as a whole.
According to Mfanelo, the inspiration for the film came from his personal experiences when he first arrived in Munsieville. He describes it as a community with rich, untold stories by the people who live there.

“Their voices and my journey became the foundation of my story. After living in Munsieville for nearly six years, I noticed how misunderstood the place was by outsiders.
People from other townships often had a negative or inaccurate perception. That’s when I decided to combine my personal experience with those misconceptions and create a narrative that gives voice to both the truth and the complexity of the area,” says Mfanelo.
It is a coming-of-age story that describes Mfanelo’s journey of overcoming adversity, but over time, he finds his footing.
“The film reflects that path of finding oneself in unfamiliar spaces, especially young people who take their first steps to adulthood.”

Mfanelo wants people to walk away with a valuable lesson learnt after watching the film.
“For people to walk away knowing that their past does not define them and that their circumstances should not overwhelm them. Life will present opportunities, so I advise anyone to grab them, and on a lighter note, don’t cheat, it’s too much admin, just love wholeheartedly,” Mfanelo advises.
Mfanelo is looking to release the short film in November, which will premiere on YouTube.
