WATCH: Fire at Bob van Reenen: Nearby structures saved
A grass fire broke out at Bob van Reenen Stadium on Sunday night, prompting a rapid response from firefighters.
A fast-moving grass fire swept through the Bob van Reenen Stadium in Krugersdorp on the evening of Sunday, July 13. While flames lit up the field, firefighters focused their efforts on protecting nearby buildings, allowing the grass to burn out naturally.

West Rand Emergency Services’ regional commander, Gerhard Nieuwoudt, said they received the call at around 18:10.

“It was a huge grass fire burning inside the stadium. The crew had to monitor it and prevent it from spreading to the buildings. They decided to let the grass burn out as there was no danger to structures. The tall grass offers an optimal hiding place for criminals; however, there were no injuries or fatalities,” he said.

Crews faced access challenges due to poor housekeeping and illegal dumping around the premises, which made certain areas difficult to reach.
Despite these obstacles, Nieuwoudt said everything ‘worked well together’, and the scene was cleared by 20:37.
