67 minutes of kindness: What’s happening in Krugersdorp today

Krugersdorp gears up to celebrate Mandela Day with heart and action. Here’s a list of what is happening in town and how you could play a part.

Former president Nelson Mandela once said, “Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu”, which means you must serve your fellow man.

Today, July 18, people from all over the country will be giving 67 minutes of their time for this very reason – giving back to their community.

Here is what’s happening in Krugersdorp and where you can help out:

• Cradle of Hope

A local law firm, JB Hugo & Cronje Inc.’s director, Shanette Jacobs, said that while they are not making a financial contribution on this occasion, they are honoured to support the charity through active volunteer work.

“We believe that giving our time and energy allows us to connect more personally with the cause and contribute in a meaningful way. Our team will be assisting in their baked bean store, helping to remove labels from donated tins that are distributed to those in need. We deeply respect the importance of financial donations as well, and we’re proud to complement those efforts with our hands-on support,” she said.

Cradle of Hope marketer Janine Masters said they are unfortunately fully booked for the day for assistance; however, they always appreciate donations. You can contact them on 076 262 0452.

• House Nehemiah

Key West Shopping Centre, Spur and Telkom will be donating lunch packs to the children at House Nehemiah. These include burgers from Spur and lunch boxes sponsored by Telkom.

They are doing this as part of their ongoing commitment to community upliftment and social impact, and they are proud to support local organisations like House Nehemiah. This initiative forms part of their broader kindness drive, aimed at giving back and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around them, especially children.

House Nehemiah always appreciates a helping hand, and you can visit them on 81 Shannon Road or contact Nicole Tolman on 074 171 3736.

• Belly2Brain

Belly2Brain’s founder, Dominique Tibbles, was locked in a cage for 67 hours to raise funds for their Change2Uncage initiative to feed 17 000 people.

They are preparing the sandwiches from 08:00 at Cradlestone Mall and need the community’s help to prepare them. Dominique said that for many, a peanut butter and jam sandwich is a snack, but for others, it may be their only meal for the day.

• Curamus School for Autism

The Curamus School for Autism will be celebrating Mandela Day on July 23 and will support the community that walks past the school early in the morning by giving them a mug with a hot drink in it.

“Help us support those who pass the school and please donate milk sugar, hot chocolate, any old mugs, extra scarves and beanies on July 22,” asked the principal, Michelle van Zyl.

You can drop off donations at the school on 94 Sterkfontein Road.

• MORAME

Morame is proud to announce an inspiring Mandela Day fundraiser event, set to take place on Saturday, July 19, at the vibrant Cirqlar@Bidon in Muldersdrift. This special occasion aims to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela through a rich tapestry of arts, culture, and community spirit, all while raising vital funds for MORAME’s impactful initiatives.

According to David Tshelapedi, CEO of MORAME, the day promises an immersive experience for all attendees, featuring a captivating photography exhibition of Madiba, offering a poignant journey through his life and times.

”The air will resonate with powerful poetry readings and the soulful sounds of local jazz musicians, creating an atmosphere of reflection and celebration. Guests can explore a diverse array of food, arts, and crafts stalls, showcasing local talent and flavours.” David said

Adding to the significance of the event, esteemed speakers, including Mayor Lucky Sele, among other notable figures, will share insights on Mandela’s enduring principles and the importance of collective action in building a better society.
