High fire danger prompts ban on open fires in West Rand

With fire danger at extreme levels, West Rand residents are warned that open fires are banned until further notice – and non-compliance could mean a R5 000 fine.

With the fire danger index at its highest level, residents are urged to take extra care as the risk of runaway veld fires increases.

West Rand Emergency Services regional commander Gerhard Nieuwoudt confirmed that from August 1, open fires are banned until further notice.

“The Fire Danger Index is currently in the red, which is why we sent out the notice,” he said.

Examples of open fires include burning garden waste and grass, big braai fires in public spaces, and fire breaks.

“This falls under municipal by-laws and residents can be fined up to R5 000 on a criminal charge if they do not comply,” Nieuwoudt added.
