Family appeals for help as toddler Suané battles rare heart defect

A Sterkfontein family is reaching out for support to help 1-year-old Suané, born with a rare heart condition, get the life-saving care she needs.

A Sterkfontein family is asking for community support as their baby daughter battles severe health complications.

Born in December 2023, little Suané has a congenital heart defect and underwent major surgery shortly after birth to reroute her oesophagus from her lungs to her stomach.

Her mother, Jackie van der Schyff, said Suané requires monthly cortisone injections, vitamins, supplements and a special milk formula, all of which are costly. She also needs antibiotics as she frequently falls ill.

Her father, Elmare Potgieter, added that the surgery cost R1.8m, with ongoing expenses for medical care and daily essentials placing further strain on the family.

“We are reaching out to anyone who can assist. Donations will help ease the financial burden and ensure that Suané receives the care she needs,” he said.

The family is also asking the public to help spread their campaign link to reach more supporters. For more details, click here.
