Louw couple shares secrets to 70 years of marriage
Pieter and Helene Louw celebrate their remarkable 70th wedding anniversary today, 8 October – a true testament to lifelong love, commitment, and devotion.
Like many things in life, a lasting marriage requires commitment and dedication – especially one that has endured over 70 years of love and devotion.
Pieter (98) and Helene (94) Louw from Noordheuwel are a perfect example of this. According to their family, they have built a beautiful life together and today, October 8, celebrate their remarkable 70th wedding anniversary.
“Their marriage is a testament to what a healthy relationship looks like,” said their daughter, Tertia.

“Their seven-decade journey is a beautiful example for us all – filled with love, companionship and commitment through both triumphs and challenges. They raised a wonderful family, travelled the world and cherished friendships. They were devoted to charity and to the Order of St John (Priory), a home health care service in Randburg, where Pieter was knighted and Helene became a Dame. They loved nature and gardening, and their story remains a true love story that has stood the test of time,” she told the Krugersdorp News.
According to Pieter, he met Helene through mutual friends, and it was love at first sight. Pieter worked as a civil engineer after training at Wits University, while Helene was a nurse. They have two children and five grandchildren, and continue to enjoy every moment together. The couple now resides at Panorama Estate Retirement Village and still shares a strong spark in their relationship.

“We do everything together – gardening, hiking, and arts and crafts. But if we could name the most important things that have kept our love strong, it would be love and true commitment,” they said.
Their favourite holiday destination is anywhere by the coast – whether in Durban or the Cape.
Their advice for couples going through a rough time is to remember that love, encouragement, and family are the foundations of a strong marriage.
